For as long as I can remember, I have always been passionate about makeup. I like to think of myself as a makeup junkie. Constantly drawn to abstract makeup creations, I often find myself watching tutorials and videos for hours. It always amazed me how simple tools or techniques could create such subtle or dramatic transformations.
One day, I finally decided to take a leap into the industry by enrolling in the cosmetology program at Citrus College. I learned a lot about the world of hair design, color and sculpting. At first, I was very excited to be in the program, but once I dove deeper into the program, I realized that I wanted more. When the school had its annual hair show, I participated as a model and makeup artist.
The theme for that year was “Earth, Wind, and Fire”. After partnering up with two classmates, we chose the “Earth” theme and decided to create a “Poison Ivy” look. As the model and makeup artist for the project, I had the pleasure of transforming myself into Poison Ivy. I was very satisfied with how everything turned out and found myself with a strong desire to do more.
It wasn’t too long after that when I stumbled upon the Yelp page for April Love Pro Makeup Academy. After reading a few glowing reviews, I decided to give the school a call and inquire about its beauty programs. When I visited the academy for the first time, I instantly knew I had to enroll. It was a very intimate environment (but not cramped at all) and the staff members and assistants were very attentive. When I first met April, I felt at home. She was very welcoming charismatic. It was very easy for her to keep the entire class engaged.
In addition to the beauty class, I decided to further my education and enroll in the hair design class taught by Richard Norman Grant, a high profile hair stylist who has worked on a number of celebrities. Like April, Richard was very charismatic. His eccentric personality always kept us on our toes. Unlike the cosmetology courses at Citrus, Richard’s six-week course has taught us very specific techniques for real world applications. Each week was focused on a different style or technique, such as bridal, editorial, extensions or up-dos.
Shortly after I graduated from the beauty course in July 2013, April began talking about the upcoming special effects class. As an avid fan of special effects in shows like “The Walking Dead”, I knew I had to sign up. When it was announced that the teacher would be one of the contestants from the special effects show, “Face-Off”, I was ecstatic. Eric Fox, our instructor for the class, was an absolute pleasure to work with. We were given the opportunity to visit his workshop and learn first hand the grueling (but rewarding) processes behind creating prosthetics and props. The class was very challenging, but taught us so much. I now have a very, very deep respect for special effects artists and models. The class does a great job in testing your patience.
Overall, my experiences with the academy were amazing! I have learned so much in such a small amount of time and am so grateful for the passionate instructors and staff at the academy. All of the instructors I’ve had the pleasure of learning from have been very encouraging and insightful. The classes are very hands-on and tailored to teach you practical skills to help you succeed in the industry. After being with the academy for so long, it’s obvious that the instructors care a great deal about the students.
The best part about the academy though, is that your experience does not end after you graduate. After graduating, you may re-attend any class you’ve taken (for free) to brush up on your skills or to perfect your techniques. Additionally, April regularly sends us graduates messages with many great opportunities ranging from: charity work, pageant work, film/print work and more. I am happy to say that April Love Pro Makeup Academy has become my home away from home.
